How to Upload Music to Spotify (and other services) via Distrokid

It’s easier than you might think.

I’ll get right to it!

I’ll assume you’ve made music at this point. If not, a new post is coming soon with details for that.

Your music needs to be uploaded to a distributor. A distributor is someone who distributes your music. There are a few different main distributors that you’ll stumble across here in the US: Tunecore, Distrokid and CDBaby.

If you just want to upload and forget all physical music products, here is the short and simple comparison of the best music distributors:

Distrokid: $19.99 yearly to upload unlimited number of songs. Keep 100% of your earnings. Stop paying yearly fee and music will be taken down.

CDBaby: $9.95 for one song and $29 per album. Keep 91% of your earnings. Keeps song online forever, no yearly fee.

Tunecore: $9.99 yearly for one song  or $29.99 per album for the first year, then $49.99 yearly to keep album online. Keep 100% of your sales.

It’s clear to see that Distrokid is the king of distributors at this point. For a small yearly fee ($19.99) you can upload an unlimited number of songs. Distrokid also has the option for you to pay a simple fee to keep your music up forever. This gives you the best of both worlds.

CDBaby takes a 9% commission of your earnings. (Psst! That adds up quick! Just think… you get your first $1000 payment- Oh wait! It’s only $910. What could you buy with $90? A new microphone? Some shoes?)

Don’t forget that to get CD and Vinyl distribution (if you’d like that) you’ll need to use a separate service in addition to Distrokid, whereas CDBaby and Tunecore provide that service (presumably for more fees) to you.

After signing up, upload your song!

Happy music making! I’ll see you on all the major music platforms!
